정식 명칭은 예멘공화국(Republic of Yemen)으로, 아라비아반도 남단 홍해의 입구에 위치하며,
해안선의 길이는 1,906㎞이다.
면적은 52만 7968㎢, 인구는 약 3,049만명, 수도는 사나(Sana)이고, 화폐는 예멘 리얄이다.
종족구성은 아랍인이 99%이며, 기타 인도인과 소말리아인이 1% 정도이다. 언어는 아랍어를 사용하며,
종교는 대부분 이슬람교(북부：시아파, 남부：수니파)를 믿고, 기타 유대교와 기독교, 힌두교도 믿는다.
